When the school announces a school trip with overnight stays, the first thought often concerns the cost. Many parents instinctively turn to the CAF. The problem is that the most well-known scheme, the children’s holiday aid (AVE), does not cover school trips or discovery classes. Understanding this distinction changes the funding strategy.
AVE and Vacaf: why school trips are excluded from the scheme
The AVE, distributed by the CAF through the Vacaf network, funds leisure stays such as summer camps, mini-camps, or sports stays. It is aimed at children aged 3 to 18, only during school holidays, in Vacaf-certified organizations.
Several departmental CAFs specify this clearly: sea classes, snow classes, discovery classes, and school trips are excluded from the AVE. Even if the stay resembles a camp, as soon as it is organized by the school within an educational framework, it falls outside the Vacaf perimeter.
This confusion is common. We receive the AVE notification in February on the Mon Compte space, we think we can use it for the green class in May, and the answer is no. It is therefore useful to clearly understand the CAF aid for school trips before counting on it in the budget.
School’s social fund: the little-known lever to finance a school trip
Funding for a school trip rarely comes directly from the CAF. However, each middle and high school has a social fund intended to help families in financial difficulty. This fund, funded by the state, is managed by the head of the institution.
In practice, a parent can submit a request to the secretariat or the school social worker. The allocation committee reviews the situation and can cover all or part of the requested contribution. The process remains confidential.
The texts from the Ministry of Education remind us of a fundamental principle: no student can be excluded from a school trip for financial reasons as long as a contribution is requested from families. Parental contributions must remain limited, and every student should be able to benefit from at least one school trip during their schooling.
How to formulate the request to the social fund
- Contact the school’s social worker or secretariat as soon as the trip is announced, without waiting for the payment deadline
- Provide the requested documents (tax notice, CAF certificate with family quotient, any proof of expenses)
- Specify the amount of the contribution requested by the school and the portion that the family can assume
Feedback on processing times varies by institution, but most committees decide within a few weeks.
Local and associative aids for school stays: concrete options
Outside of the social fund, several funding channels exist. They do not come from the CAF but complement or replace aid that does not exist within the Vacaf framework.
Municipal and departmental aids
Some municipalities offer specific aids for families for school outings with overnight stays. The amount and conditions depend on each community. It is advisable to inquire directly with the CCAS (communal social action center) or the education service of the municipality.
Some departments also fund targeted schemes, particularly for discovery classes in primary schools. These aids often pass through the school itself, which informs families at the beginning of the year.
Associations like JPA
Youth in the Open Air (JPA) supports the departure of children from low-income families for collective stays. Its action covers both camps and certain school projects. The JPA awards scholarships based on applications, in connection with the institutions and organizing teachers.
Other local associations, often linked to parent federations, organize cake sales, lotteries, or crowdfunding actions to reduce the remaining costs for families.
CAF family quotient and school trips: an indirect but useful link
Even though the CAF does not directly finance school trips, the family quotient calculated by the CAF often serves as a reference. Social funds, municipal aids, and certain associations use it to assess a family’s eligibility.
A low family quotient (below a threshold that varies according to the schemes) opens the door to more significant support. Updating your situation on the Mon Compte CAF space before submitting a file allows you to have an up-to-date quotient, which speeds up processing.
For beneficiary families, the family quotient certificate can be downloaded directly from the caf.fr website. This is the document that the school or municipality will request as a priority.
